We had the good fortune of connecting with Honey Ahijevych and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Honey, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My father was a Lawyer by day and then an Event Planner by night – he had a non profit event planning company. He started the Indian Association of Great Britain in 1964. The purpose of this was to introduce the western culture to the Indian Culture and vise versa. The association would have shows, events etc and he invited dignitaries to attend. In 1970 he was invited by the Queen to attend her Garden Party as recognition of his all his work. He and my mother were the first Asians to be invited by the Royal Family to such events. Now it’s very different in the UK but back then it was a huge deal. He spent his nights and weekends planning events, weddings, Bollywood concerts (he knew everyone in Bollywood and also all the politicians and members of the Royal Family) and fund raisers for the community and the Royal Family. I grew up helping him plan and run these events. It’s in my blood. I saw how it’s so important to be a great communicator and leader – I inherited those qualities from him. I am a people person just like him and a great communicator and leader. I did a degree in Information Technology and later moved to the USA where I worked for a ladies Non Profit in New York. I moved to Colorado in 2001 and worked for Ball Aerospace. I was bored. I spoke to my father about this and he said “Do what you do best, you are a people’s person, a great organizer and planner…start your own company”. That was that! I started my own company.
What should our readers know about your business?
My background and upbringing definitely help set me apart from the competition. My Indian upbringing combined with growing up in the UK have helped me grow my business and also help other couples plan their fusion events/weddings. My packages are very different – I don’t believe that “Day of Coordination” starts at either 90 or 30 days out, it starts from the moment a couple signs you on. My staff and I get involved from day 1 for Day of Coordination clients, we like to get to know our couples intimately from Day 1 so that if anything crops up on the day, we will have already established a great understanding of the couple and can attend to any emergency or any situation. We believe in going above and beyond for each client without nickle and diming them. Our commitment to each of our clients is that we are there for them 100% regardless of the package they have chosen. We will make sure that their day is seamless and smooth. We decorate their wedding night hotel room and leave them with cake and champagne and flowers!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love eating and drinking. My first stop would be to get the best Margarita in Colorado – at Centro Mexican Kitchen on Pearl Street, next up I would take them to the St Julien Hotel and Spa, the St Julien has a beautiful outdoor patio with live music at the weekend with table side service and great wine and cocktails. We would also go for a hike at Chautauqua and then walk downtown (or take the bus) from Chautauqua to downtown Boulder where we will go to the roof top of Corrida. Corrida has the most amazing views of the Flatirons and some great gin drinks! A visit to Colorado isn’t complete without going to Denver – I would take them to Union Station and we would walk around Denver – the Milk Market, Terminal Bar, Stoic and Genuine, Rino and a visit to Linger etc. These are all fun and interesting places!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father of course and my husband. My husband has seen me struggle to get started at a time when there was no Facebook, no online planners forums where you can get referrals and ideas, he helped me get my website up and running, did my SEO and attended Networking events with me. He was my first assistant and was instrumental in getting me started and up and running. He supported me and had my back when there was no one around. After that in 2012 I hired Karla Pando who has been with me ever since. She is my biggest support and help and cheer leader now that my husband is no longer part of the company.
